Whether on supermarket shelves, in canteens, or in restaurants, what we eat should not only taste good, it should also be safe. Every year, World Food Safety Day on the 7th June reminds us that safe food is not a given. According to the WHO, around 2.4 million people worldwide die every year as a result of contaminated food. The day was proclaimed by the United Nations in 2018 to draw attention to this very fact and to mobilise responsibility.
Because food safety is more than hygiene regulations or laboratory tests. It is a shared responsibility of agriculture, industry, trade, science, politics, and ultimately all of us.
