Global fight against food waste

Balingen, Germany, 10/02/2025

| According to studies, up to one third of all food produced worldwide ends up as waste each year. This alarming figure is a growing concern not only for consumers, but it is also climbing the agenda of both the media and policymakers – especially in light of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12.3, which calls for halving global food waste by 2030. One of the key levers in this effort is the deployment of modern technology across the entire value chain.

Innovative solutions for World Food Day

In recognition of World Food Day on October 16, Bizerba is highlighting innovative solutions that are setting new standards for sustainable food production. As a global leader in weighing and inspection technology, Bizerba is raising the bar with seal inspection, label verification, and real-time checkweighing – all designed to minimize food waste right at the production stage, where approximately 13 percent is lost. Precision is especially critical for fresh products like fish, meat, and vegetables.

Precision matters in fresh food production

“Our inspection systems instantly and reliably detect seal contamination, labels with incorrect expiration dates, or overfilling – before the products even leave the factory floor,” explains Aaron L. Garry, President and CEO of Bizerba North America and UK. “This not only prevents recalls and quality issues, but also saves significant amounts of valuable fish, meat and other foods every day, safeguarding important margins for the industry. With our technology, some of our customers can reduce food waste due to seal inspection by up to 40 percent. That’s a significant contribution to sustainability and resource conservation.”

Smart inspection technology in action

Bizerba’s systems offer a range of compelling advantages for producers and retailers alike:

  • Up to 40 percent reduction in food waste through seal inspection.
  • Intelligent combination of machine vision and precise checkweighing to identify packaging errors and overfilling, with automatic sorting of defective products.
  • Seamless documentation via inline image capture to meet the highest standards of quality management and audit requirements.

Sustainability beyond World Food Day

Reducing food waste is not just a topic for World Food Day. Globally, sustainability and resource protection play a vital role. With Bizerba’s solutions, producers and retailers can make a meaningful contribution to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
